New Kristi Yamaguchi Book

So, Kristi wrote a new book called "Dream Big, Little Pig". It will be released on March 1, 2011.  You can purchase the book at Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble, and other locations

To support the book, Kristi is going on a book tour.  I'll add her book signing dates as I find them in the Appearances Tab.  I've read that her first date in March 11, but I can't find that one.  On March 12th, Kristi will be at the Mall of America signing at 2 pm.

Bye Charm City Cakes

Last night was the series finale of Charm City Cakes on the Food Network. I'm seriously going to miss the show.  Duff and the gang are a bunch of over-the-top (at times) amazing cake decorators.  The season they've done a bunch of entertainment industry cakes and all were crazy good.  Last night they made the DeLorean with both car doors open with the fire trailing behind the car.

This is the synops on the Food Network website:

BACK TO THE FUTURE celebrates it's 25th anniversary reunion and stars Michael J. Fox, Leah Thompson and Christopher Lloyd look on as Chef Duff unveils the ultimate DeLorean time machine made out of cake. But back at the bakery things seem a little crazy and Duff wonders if he's losing his mind... or maybe the Flux Capacitor is just on the fritz...

Haven't read if it was their idea to stop shooting or if the Food Network decided to stop the series.  You can still follow the gang on the internet.

PS:  Mary Alice is(was) 7 months pregnant.  Congrats you crazy girl.

2011 US Figure Skating Championships

This past weekend I watched the U.S. Firgure Skating National Championships.  Normally the TOP 2 or 3 will automatically be our representatives to the World Championships in March 2011.  I watched Dance, the Ladies, and some of the Men skate their hearts out.

DANCE
I have to say Dance has truly improved in this country within the last 10 years.  This is mainly due to the fact that Russian coaches wanting to make more money and live a better life came to U.S. and taught N. American's the Russian way.  Everyone knew it was David/White's title to lose and they walked away with the crown without much of a challenge.

2. Maia & Alex Shibutani
3. Madison Chock & Greg Zuerlein

LADIES
The Ladies were all so different not just in age, but in ability, flexibility, and personality.  The TOP 3 really were tied going into the long program so anyone of them could've won.  What it really came down to (to me) was the maturity of Alissa Czisny compared to the other 2 (Rachael Flatt & Mirai Nagasu).  Although Mirai is catching up, Alissa has some 6 years of experience on her and 5 years on Rachael.  While Alissa was pretty and did a mostly clean program, the program was pretty flat.  Rachael & Mirai made more mistakes, but one bored me to tears and the other just shocked me with her sketchy performance.  The bad part about all this is that only 2 Ladies (Alissa & Rachael) are going to World's mainly due to Alissa's collapse in 2009 at Worlds.  Because of all this, Mirai in unable to go to World's in Japan and she is the one with the fire power that can compete with the Asian girls.  The real shock of the night went to Caroline Zhang.  I couldn't believe it was her skating. She is such a beautiful, artistic skater; however, puberty has not been kind to her.

2. Rachael Flatt
3. Mirai Nagasu

Faces of America: The Yamaguchi Story -- How an Immigrant Farmer Paved the Way for Success

This is an amazing story about Kristi Yamaguchi's Paternal Grandfather.  Its about perseverance and following your dream.

Excerpted from Faces of America

Kristi's paternal grandfather was a man named Tatsuichi Yamaguchi, born April 24, 1879, in Ureshino, Japan. He died in California in 1958 when Kristi's father Jim was just eighteen. Kristi never met him, and her father knew surprisingly little about his origins when we talked to him. But we were able to reconstruct his story -- and it is as inspiring as any story I encountered during the course of this project.

We found a passenger list from the Japanese Diplomatic Records Office showing that Tatsuichi Yamaguchi, a twenty-one-year-old farmer, left his hometown in Japan for Hawaii on November 16, 1899, under a labor permit. Tatsuichi had signed a three-year contract with the Onomea Sugar Company on the big island of Hawaii, near Hilo. At that time, Hawaii was about to become a territory of the United States, and it was dominated by vast sugar plantations owned by American companies. These plantations required huge numbers of workers and the indigenous population of Hawaii had been decimated by the diseases introduced by foreigners. Labor had to come from abroad. Japanese workers were welcome and desired.

This was a new phenomenon in Japan. "Hawaii Fever," as it was called, exerted a powerful attraction, especially for younger sons of large families, because they could never expect to inherit their family's farm. In 1899, 130 people from the Saga prefecture applied to emigrate to Hawaii, and 57 were granted permission to go. They set sail in November of that year. Kristi's grandfather was among these pioneers. Tatsuichi was the fourth son in his family. He had no hope of inheriting any land in Japan. It was a calculated risk.
