Faces of America: The Yamaguchi Story -- How an Immigrant Farmer Paved the Way for Success

This is an amazing story about Kristi Yamaguchi's Paternal Grandfather.  Its about perseverance and following your dream.

Excerpted from Faces of America

Kristi's paternal grandfather was a man named Tatsuichi Yamaguchi, born April 24, 1879, in Ureshino, Japan. He died in California in 1958 when Kristi's father Jim was just eighteen. Kristi never met him, and her father knew surprisingly little about his origins when we talked to him. But we were able to reconstruct his story -- and it is as inspiring as any story I encountered during the course of this project.

We found a passenger list from the Japanese Diplomatic Records Office showing that Tatsuichi Yamaguchi, a twenty-one-year-old farmer, left his hometown in Japan for Hawaii on November 16, 1899, under a labor permit. Tatsuichi had signed a three-year contract with the Onomea Sugar Company on the big island of Hawaii, near Hilo. At that time, Hawaii was about to become a territory of the United States, and it was dominated by vast sugar plantations owned by American companies. These plantations required huge numbers of workers and the indigenous population of Hawaii had been decimated by the diseases introduced by foreigners. Labor had to come from abroad. Japanese workers were welcome and desired.

This was a new phenomenon in Japan. "Hawaii Fever," as it was called, exerted a powerful attraction, especially for younger sons of large families, because they could never expect to inherit their family's farm. In 1899, 130 people from the Saga prefecture applied to emigrate to Hawaii, and 57 were granted permission to go. They set sail in November of that year. Kristi's grandfather was among these pioneers. Tatsuichi was the fourth son in his family. He had no hope of inheriting any land in Japan. It was a calculated risk.

Alex Wong: having surgery Jul 13

By now you now that Alex was hurt last week Tuesday during his last rehearsal before show day. On the show, Nigel says he lacerated his Achilles tendon. Alex says he actually tore his Achilles. It'll be long recovery process. I'm sending you my prayers for a successful surgery and recovery.

See Alex being interviewed this AM on Good Day LA.
Los Angeles - Gifted dancer Alex Wong was a contender to win on Fox’s hit reality show "So You Think You Can Dance" until he suffered a torn Achilles during rehearsal ending his run on the show and learned that he will require surgery to repair the damage. Alex tells “Good Day LA” what happened and shares his plans for the future.

Alex Wong dances

Alex was amazing on So You Think You Can Dance.  He gave up his contract as a Principle soloist with the Miami City Ballet (MCB)  just for have a chance to be on the show.  He gets on the show and he gets injured on his 3rd week.  WOW that's just harsh.  If he heals well, and decides he wants to forgo another season dancing with MCB, and try to get on the show again, that'll be unbelievable because I figured his intention  was to return to MCB after the show/tour.  With 2 seasons off MCB...

Would Edward Villella allow him to return?
Would Alex retain his ballet skills?
Will his injury heal enough for him to be that athletic ballet dancer he once was?

hmmm many questions Alex will need to decide for himself.  For now, its all about getting through the surgery as best he can and begin the healing process.

Remember Alex's time on the show because he was amazing and was the star of the show.

Kristi Yamaguchi

Kristi is an internationally known figure skater, author, host, Dancing With The Stars contestant. She competed in singles and pairs with Rudy Galindo. She's won National, World, and Olympics championships. After winning the Olympic Gold Medal in 1992, Kristi turned pro and continued to compete.  She dominated the pro circuit competitions for about 6 years until Michele Kwan started competing as a pro (before grand prix existed).  She joined the Stars on Ice tour where she performed for 10 years. Kristi got married in 2000 to Bret Hedican, recently retired NHL Hockey Player in Hawaii. She retired from touring in 2002 to start a family with her husband. Kristi and Bret have 2 girls Keara (2003) and Emma (2005).

In 1996, Kristi established Always Dream Foundation. The foundation works with/for kids. Their latest project was to create an all ability kids park in Fremont, California.

In 1997, Kristi authored Figure Skating For Dummies with a forward provided by Scott Hamilton.

Beginning in 2003, Kristi hosts Kristi Yamaguchi and Friends, an annual figure skating show. Kristi still skates in shows from time to time. When not skating, she hosts.

In 2008, Kristi won the Dancing With The Stars crown in Season 6. She was fabulous from week 1 and she really pushed partner Mark Ballas to create increasingly difficult routines.

Alex Wong

Alex was a Principal Soloist with the Miami City Ballet. In order to tryout for So You Think You Can Dance, Alex had to give up his position with MCB. His artistic director was non-too-happy about this decision; but he didn't stop Alex either and let him go.

I loved Alex's S5 Vegas solo and it was so sad when he couldn't get a leave of absence from MCB to do the show. But, I think it made him hungrier. This year, he got a free pass to Vegas (that's why we didn't see him audition in Miami) and again did a fabulous solo to start the week. Alex made the show and in his first week, he gets paired with Allison Holker S2 (with Sonya choreographing). Can I just say WOW?!?! The dance was beautiful and emotional; it had depth and strength. Alex has that "it" factor that all the other dancers in the show don't have. The judges did go overboard with the major OTT tongue bathing. I just hope it doesn't backfire and turn people off.

Alex good luck the rest of the season.

Sascha Radetsky

Sascha is a Soloist with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) and is married to fellow ABT Soloist Stella Abrera. Sascha played "Charlie", the unrequited love interest to the main character "Jody" in Center Stage. In real life, Sascha is a much sought-after guest dancer & teacher. In 08-09, Sascha left ABT to spend a year with the Dutch National Ballet as a Principle Dancer; on Jan 1, 2010, Sascha returned to ABT. Sascha is a beautiful man, but an even more beautiful dancer. I love his jumps and the way he dances like a man not a boy.

Benji Schwimmer

My favorite west coast swing dancer is Benji Schwimmer. Benji was crowned "America's Favorite Dancer" during Season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance. Since then, he has traveled the world teaching, performing, and choreographing in many different styles of dance. He is a dancer in great demand and he has expanded his resume to include acting. He was in 2 movies Love 'N Dancing, Leading Ladies and choreographed at least 2 music videos Christina Aguilera's Candyman, LeAnn Rimes' Swingin.

Though he is constantly traveling, he still does compete in Swing. I enjoy watching him dance and I hope one day I can see him live. I think you'll enjoy watching him too.

Hello World!

Hello world! Welcome to my first ever blog.

What do I want to talk about? Do I really want to publish the ramblings of my brain? What do I really want to do with this blog? Hmmmmm

Guess I could always eventually delete the embarrassing things. lol

I know I want to talk about my favorite things. Talk about where I live, things I spaz about, my friends (hmmm maybe not).
